Kyla investigates further into possible connections to Roy’s death, learning more about the early days of life in the Beyond. On the Sea of Veritas, a decision is made that will radically alter Boden and Magnus' relationship, leaving the crew of the Lucy at the mercy of a new navigational force.
All right, Beetle, let's see what you're all about.
QUILL:The trial of Chief Planner Protist.
KYLA:Chief Planner?
QUILL:As a fellow planner, it falls to me to ask the questions and act as chief arbiter in this dispute.
CAMDEN:Not a dispute, when the facts are clear.
QUILL:Please, Camden.
CAMDEN:He stole resources from Serac! Plain and simple.
QUILL:Outbursts like that only make the process harder. Protist, you've heard the charge. Your defense?
PROTIST:Such animosity and vitriol from a Terran is not surprising.
CAMDEN:Oh, you haven't seen vitriol...
PROTIST:The metals in question have no place in Brise Soleil. Our laboratories are built in cooperation with the foundry master. I would never confiscate resources that were not mine.
CAMDEN:So who did?
PROTIST:Am I the investigator?
CAMDEN:No, you're the guilty one! And I know you sent your minions to Serac to do your dirty work. You're a weasel.
QUILL:Camden, do you have any proof?
CAMDEN:Of course. Before Daymond died in that cave-in three months ago, he made two last journal entries in his diary. I'd like Protist to read the last one.
PROTIST:That seems quite unnecessary.
CAMDEN:Oh, you're squirming now, eh? Fine! I'll read it then. "I woke up today noticing precious metals were missing from the foundry. When I went to ask the miners about it, they were gone. I found badges that were manipulated. They weren't our people. Then I remembered something curious the other day with one of the miners. He mentioned missing the hot air of the jungle. I thought it was odd. Camden needs to know about this."
PROTIST:Illogical and emotional rubbish!
RAMULUS:Hey, what are you doing in here alone?
KYLA:Uh, business.
RAMULUS:Mind if I join you?
KYLA:So polite. Are you trying to apologize?
RAMULUS:For what?
KYLA:For making me feel stupid back there.
RAMULUS:Kyla, I'm, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.
KYLA:You did.
RAMULUS:Ah, I am so, so, so sorry.
KYLA:You are so, so, so predictable! Ha ha!
RAMULUS:That is wrong.
KYLA:Reminds me of when we first met, you remember?
RAMULUS:Of course. You had just started training with Sam, and it was--
KYLA:My first visit to the jungle.
RAMULUS:I was--
KYLA:Sixteen and just as gullible.
YOUNG RAMULUS:So you keep the peace?
YOUNG KYLA:Something like that.
YOUNG RAMULUS:But I thought the Beyond was perfect.
YOUNG KYLA:Really?
YOUNG RAMULUS:Yeah, I mean, Cwrig's contained.
YOUNG KYLA:That's why I'm here.
YOUNG RAMULUS:What? What do you mean?
YOUNG KYLA:I shouldn't. I swore an oath of silence to Sam.
YOUNG RAMULUS:Silence about what? Tell me!
YOUNG KYLA:Well... Okay but... keep this between us?
YOUNG RAMULUS:Of course.
YOUNG KYLA:Kids are going missing in the Beyond.
YOUNG RAMULUS:What?!
YOUNG KYLA:Yeah! Smoke has been seeping into homes, and then the next morning, they're gone.
YOUNG RAMULUS:No way!
YOUNG KYLA:No girls yet, only boys... Why do you think I'm here? Do you see any boys training with Sam?
YOUNG RAMULUS:Where do they go?
YOUNG KYLA:No one knows. Some say they're sacrificed to Veritas. Gone forever. Leaving a world run only by women.
YOUNG RAMULUS:What?! Stop it, you're kidding.
YOUNG KYLA:You were worried!
YOUNG RAMULUS:No, I wasn't.
YOUNG KYLA:You're kind of cute when you look nervous.
YOUNG RAMULUS:I'll get you back!
YOUNG KYLA:Watch it! I have the power to banish people.
KYLA:Pft-ha-ha-ha-ha!
RAMULUS:You've been threatening to banish me for ten years.
KYLA:No wonder--
LIANA:Hello? Anyone seen a couple of boring old people on the train? Oh, there they are!
KYLA:Liana, what happened to your hair?
LIANA:Come on, I found a way to the top of the train. Arcus showed me. It's so fun. Come on!
KYLA:I have work.
RAMULUS:Ky, you're gonna be leaving us at the Well. Let's have some fun.
KYLA:Didn't Sam tell you? I'm going with you guys all the way to Brise Soleil.
RAMULUS:Really?
LIANA:Even more reason to celebrate! Come on!
CY:Oh me young fair Lucy! Dances two-steps on her planks and wears sock on her shanks, oh, me young fair Lucy. Oh, Lucy...
BODEN:Socks on her shanks?
CY:Sure. You never seen a lady wearing shank socks?
BODEN:How much longer?
CY:I'd say give it a few more songs. I've never been out this far.
BODEN:Rumors are that the wall of water is intense, flowing from the surface of the sea to the sky and back again.
REGGIE:Thousand times stronger than Crescent Falls, they say.
BODEN:And to think, we could be the first to break through it!
MAGNUS:Ah... eh...
BODEN:He's waking up.
CY:Are you sure these ropes are tight enough? You know I'll be the first one he comes after. Oh! Reg, play the song again. Maybe it'll put them back to sleep. It's working... Fair Lucy... fair Lucy... Oh nuts.
BODEN:He's coming too.
MAGNUS:What's, what's going on? Boden? Hey! Cy? Reggie? Why am I tied up?
BODEN:Moral support.
MAGNUS:Where are we? Did I miss the train?
BODEN:You've been out for hours. We got the boat in the sea and a borrowed engine running.
REGGIE:Correction, we had the engine running.
BODEN:We're far from shore and close to--
MAGNUS:Wait! You know I didn't want to do this.
CY:Don't flip out, Magnus. You're the patient one.
MAGNUS:You tied me up?!
BODEN:Do you see this?
MAGNUS:I see the stupid coin. I wish we never did.
BODEN:This coin is a find, Magnus. We have instructions to use this weird, powerful rock to break through the wall of water on the edge of the sea. And then this coin will lead us to the last living remnant out there in the wasteland. Don't you see?
MAGNUS:You're insane! For one, no one's ever broken through the wall of water! And two, for good reason! There's death beyond the canopy of mist! It's called the wasteland for a reason! You seriously have never listened to anyone in your life. Mom? Dad? Sam?
BODEN:They said the same thing to Sam when he was our age. Did he let that stop him?
MAGNUS:You're not Sam, Boden. You're selfish. You're not doing this to pursue truth. You're doing this to make your mark.
BODEN:Maybe so. And you can either help us or stay tied up and watch us. Either way, we're doing this.
MAGNUS:Boden?
BODEN:Magnus, this is our opportunity. Sam told us that the sea was reclaimed and that it held everything we said about it. Adventure!
MAGNUS:He was talking about us, idiot! Ever heard of a metaphor?
BODEN:Ever heard of taking a risk?! Dad thinks we're inept. Sam thinks we're juvenile. I think we're better than that! I know I am. It isn't selfishness. It's purpose.
MAGNUS:Untie me.
BODEN:No. I know you. You want to do this. I remember the look in your eye when you set eyes on those blueprints. Don't. Wimp. Out.
CY:If you're both through having your brotherly quarrel, I think we're getting closer.
OLD SAM:I don't think I've heard it played that way before.
RENEE:Oh, Sam...
OLD SAM:Have you seen Kyla?
RENEE:I'm afraid not.
OLD SAM:Are you all right? You look tired.
RENEE:Just caught up in the music, that's all.
OLD SAM:I didn't realize you brought your cello to Barrents.
RENEE:I didn't. It was a gift from the Sound O' Seas Orchestra. Isn't it beautiful? Made of labyrinth tree. The resonance is amazing. They even invited me to play with them for their next concert! What a dream.
OLD SAM:I never did learn an instrument.
RENEE:I could teach you.
OLD SAM:Isn't there some warning about teaching an old dog new tricks?
RENEE:You're no old dog.
OLD SAM:I feel old. I think I'm losing my ability to persuade.
RENEE:Why do you say that?
OLD SAM:I tried to get Magnus and Boden to come stay with you and the kids for a little while. Your kids are such hard workers, dedicated to giving back to the people.
RENEE:Sam, I need to--
OLD SAM:And Barrents! What can I say? The place is a mess!
RENEE:Sam--
OLD SAM:I tried to ease Quill's mind last month. I don't know... I can't seem to get through to them. They seem to be wandering.
RENEE:Well, sometimes we all have to wander a bit before we find the right path.
OLD SAM:Do we? Once I found the truth of Elyon, I never dreamed of wandering again.
RENEE:Not everyone is you, Sam.
OLD SAM:Oh, true. Hard to be perfect! You're making music again. That's progress. A month ago you told me you didn't know how to say goodbye.
RENEE:I still don't.
OLD SAM:Well, Roy's been gone now--
RENEE:No, you don't understand. Now I don't know how to say goodbye to the kids.
OLD SAM:Did I miss something?
RENEE:Sam... I'm not going back home to Brise Soleil.
OLD SAM:Why not?
RENEE:I don't want to go home. I don't know how to say it. It sounds negative, but I just... I spent so many years in the jungle, raising the kids, trying to make those trees feel like home, but I never felt at home.
OLD SAM:What about Liana and Ramulus?
RENEE:They're old enough to take care of themselves.
OLD SAM:Renee, feelings can be deceptive. Are you sure you're making the right decision?
RENEE:For once, I feel like I'm making the right decision for me. Sit down and let me play for you.
OLD SAM:Oh, thank you, but I have to speak to Kyla. I can't seem to find anybody on this train. What was that?
RENEE:I don't know!
OLD SAM:Is that rain?
RAMULUS:Jump, Kyla!
RENEE:Well, there's your answer! They're on top of the train, not in it. Should we be concerned?
OLD SAM:I don't know. Should we?
REGGIE:I can't get it to work!
CY:We can't make it through without speed, Boden!
MAGNUS:With that old engine, we'll all die trying! Turn the ship around, Bo!
CY:What about the rock engine?
REGGIE:I think Magnus might be--
ALL:Whoa!
REGGIE:It's too late!
CY:We're getting pulled in!
BODEN:Magnus!
MAGNUS:Untie me!
CAMDEN:Arcus... did you find the problem?
ARCUS:Uh, still looking, chief.
LIANA:Arcus, there you are! Why didn't you jump with us?
ARCUS:The prospect of flying off the train.
KYLA:So you have better sense than all of us.
LIANA:Well, thanks for the inside info, anyways.
RAMULUS:Couldn't have done it without-- Whoa!
ARCUS:Ooh! Ah-hah, hold on! I got you.
RAMULUS:Ooh... That was a close one. And to think I jumped fifteen cars and almost fell off a ladder on the caboose.
KYLA:I'm just glad you're okay.
RAMULUS:Is that true? Hard to tell sometimes.
KYLA:Shut up.
CAMDEN:Arcus, talk to me.
ARCUS:False alarm, Camden, it looks like it was nothing more than birds flying.
CAMDEN:Really? Well, I think I found the birds.
KYLA:Camden, I am so sorry.
CAMDEN:Eh, if I were a wee bit younger, I would have been right up there with you.
CY:You did it, Magnus! We're in business!
MAGNUS:We need to control the metal contact with the rock. The more it makes contact with the copper, the more powerful it becomes. I don't know how long we have, but if we're gonna do this, we better do it quickly. You all wanted this! We can still turn back.
BODEN:Are you kidding?! My heart's racing! I have a good feeling, Magnus.
MAGNUS:I hate feelings.
CY:The wall is towering! It's like up to the sky. I can't breathe.
MAGNUS:If we don't ram this wall fast and hard, this ship will burst into pieces!
REGGIE:Including us!
CY:Then let's do it! Hit the switch, Magnus!
MAGNUS:Get ready! Hold on to something! When I drop this lever...!
KYLA:Camden told me you were here. What's this? Green berry tarts with cream? You're either hungry or...
OLD SAM:Well... Renee's not going back to Brise Soleil.
KYLA:Why?
OLD SAM:I don't understand it, honestly. But I'm afraid she's going to wander a bit. Did you listen to the file?
KYLA:Only made it through part... I got distracted.
OLD SAM:Did you?
KYLA:So what happened at the trial?
OLD SAM:He was found guilty. Stripped of his title.
KYLA:But he's still a leader in Brise Soleil.
OLD SAM:My brother had a soft spot for wayward individuals. He thought Protist was worth a second chance. They had a lot in common.
KYLA:Like what?
OLD SAM:Roy made his share of missteps, like all of us.
CY AND REGGIE:Elyon!!
MAGNUS:Boden, are you seeing this? The mist is so thick. Is this the wasteland? Boden? Boden! Cy, Reggie, where's Boden?
CY:Boden!
REGGIE:Boden! Where are you, boy?!
MAGNUS:Guys, look up ahead! The mist is thinning. I think we were still in the canopy. Boden?
CY:What's that?
REGGIE:It's coming from over here.
MAGNUS:Behind the door. Gah!
BODEN:Hey, boys, guess what just woke up?
CY:The coin?
BODEN:Yup. Told you this was special.
CY:So where does it go?
BODEN:The plan said it somehow connects to the engine.
MAGNUS:I'll do it. Give it to me.
CY:Are you seeing what I'm seeing?
REGGIE:I've never heard such silence. No birds...
BODEN:Even the water looks dead.
CY:Whoa, Lucy! Who's at the wheel?!
BODEN:No one.
REGGIE:The ship's turning on its own.
CY:She's alive!
MAGNUS:Where are we headed? Wait, who's steering?
BODEN:No one.
MAGNUS:How's that possible? Cy?
CY:Well, I mean, the Lucy is a ragtag ship. But her engine is connected to the--
MAGNUS:Wait. You think the coin in the engine is driving the ship?
REGGIE:Doesn't look like we're in charge anymore.
CY:Someone wanted us to put it there for a reason, Magnus.
BODEN:It must be the coin! Ready for adventure, brother?
MAGNUS:Ready or not.
CY:Onward ho, Fair Lucy. Onward ho!
