The Gearlock Train embarks on its first voyage south to Barrents, to be christened by the Goodwin family. Obsessed with the mystery of the coin and sunstone, Boden, Magnus, Cy and Reggie experience a christening of their own, awakening a power unseen by anyone in the Beyond.
You sure you're ready for this? Never better. And comment.
SPEAKER_12Mr. T. Movement generator moment generating.
SPEAKER_03Engineering. All systems normal. All life on your teeth.
SPEAKER_12We have a rough run of it here, it's been a but it takes more than that to break it. Now let's show these fancy medicines. And opportunities all the intellectuals.
SPEAKER_03It's hardly a terror train.
SPEAKER_12Oh, I as it runs on mist and electricity rather than coal. And it would hardly last long underground. But it's got the same feel, that rolling crust aliens on green earth. Does an old Terran heart good to feel that under his boots again? Camden, are are you? Am I what? Oh, I I know what you're thinking.
SPEAKER_11It's awfully moist in here, don't you know? Oh right. Well, if that's the case, I think I'll see how our maiden passengers are doing. Oh, aye. Especially the maiden passengers, eh? Camden. Oh, I uh the lassie in three B seems your tight.
SPEAKER_03And with that, I'm off to find a seat by myself until we reach Barons. Bye. Oh, don't don't mind a wee tease now, lad.
SPEAKER_12Uh, Arcus. Uh, before you go, there's something weighing on my mind that uh we need to talk about.
SPEAKER_03What do we need to talk about? The gear lock is running perfectly.
SPEAKER_12Last night I I heard you screaming again from your room. Nightmares?
SPEAKER_10No, no, no! Don't leave me here, please don't leave! I'm sorry! I'm queer! I'll be back! Cannon!
SPEAKER_04Cannon!
unknownI'm throwing it! Cannon!
SPEAKER_03Nothing. Probably just stressed about the gearlock, that's all.
SPEAKER_12I feel like like there's been some kind of war between us since the cave-in last month.
SPEAKER_03I've never been fond of being underground. It's more than that, lad. We both know that. What's it got to do with anything?
SPEAKER_12Just the way you were calling out to me like that. I did not want to leave. Elion knows, but I heard those those same screams last night.
SPEAKER_03I'm going to check on the passengers.
SPEAKER_12Would you stand still for a moment? Stop walking away. Look me in the eyes, lad. What's wrong? Is there something I can do to help?
SPEAKER_03You want to help, Camden? I do. Then tell me what happened to my mom and dad. Arcas. I've already told your story, yeah. Figures. Arcas. Call me when we're parents.
SPEAKER_09Oh madness. It's wonderful to see you on this beautiful. Skip the intro, okay, Cy. Bowden said you were asked to build an experimental engine for some anonymous designer to put in his uh fishing boat. Uh yes, exactly the case. He doesn't want anyone to know who he is so as not to upset the competition. Uh-huh. Right. Uh let's just make this quick.
SPEAKER_08Here are the plans, and here is the engine. Or what we have so far.
SPEAKER_09What's this rock? I don't know. What do you think? Prototype's alright. It'll run, I think, but it's these blueprints. This is something new. What do you mean? I like to think I'm pretty decent with the machine, but whoever this guy is, he's good. Real, real good. I see where you were running into trouble. Even I struggled to construct an engine this complicated on my own. How long have you been working on this? About a month now. Not long after we're turning from the well. Is this all there is? The prince, the rock? Yes. That's it. So what's your trouble? The torque. It's a mighty powerful thing. Too powerful to keep it from stressing the frame and risking fractures at full power. That's because the steel you're using is too low quality for the job. What you need is only made on request by the foundry master at Serek. If your client wants this engine, he won't do it without raising some eyebrows. Great. No engine, no deal. Oh, I didn't say I couldn't give you an engine. What? Come again?
SPEAKER_08Magnus? You're writing all over the very important blueprint that isn't ours.
SPEAKER_09We can pick up some material today at the market. Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_08It's early! Wait! The new gear lock train.
SPEAKER_10Come on, Bo! We gotta go or Sam will kill us! Well done, Magnus! Thank you! We're not parent for parts for your engine. You're coming with us.
SPEAKER_03Yes. We're here. On my way to engineering. Arcas, since you were a boy. Please stop, unless you're going to tell me the truth.
SPEAKER_12That's just it. What? I don't know the whole story.
SPEAKER_03Who does?
SPEAKER_12Hello, Sam. I can say with confidence that this train will make you proud. It's a beauty.
SPEAKER_06Marcus seeing it in person, it just takes my breath away. Thank you, Mr. Goodwin. You'll never learn, will you? Sorry. Sam. Come on. The people are waiting.
SPEAKER_08We're so dead, Bowden. We're late. No, we're not. Look, there's Renee and Ramulus. I don't even see Sam. Uh I see him. He's over there by the platform.
SPEAKER_09Well, a good crowd gathered for the ceremony. We totally forgot about the banners.
SPEAKER_07Figures. Liana. Do you guys even work here? Like in the town or the region or in the beyond?
SPEAKER_08That's funny, Liana. Of course we work. We handle the listening post and we work with the peacemaker sometimes.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah? What's her name?
SPEAKER_09Her name? It's uh a long name. Remember, Bowden? Ah, hard to remember.
SPEAKER_08Really? Yeah, I think I had to write it down. Smith? Right, see? So common, so hard to nail down. She's elusive, that peacemaker.
SPEAKER_07Matthew Smith.
SPEAKER_08Matt?
SPEAKER_07Ah, good old Matt.
SPEAKER_08She's a guy?
SPEAKER_07You better shape up, boys. You hardly know anything that's going on in your parents' region.
SPEAKER_08That's not entirely true. Odin? Okay, maybe we sleep in too much.
SPEAKER_07Come on, bedheads. Sam's starting the ceremony.
SPEAKER_06Behind me is a marvel of our time. A tribute to the creative minds of our craftsmen in Sirac. Marcus, would you mind coming up here and saying a few words? This young man is the brains behind this machine.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Mr. Good Sam. It was an honor just to work on the train. I only hope that it's just the beginning of what we can imagine, what we can dream.
SPEAKER_06Yes, Elion has always asked us to dream big. You have done that. You have given us an incredible gift, one that I hope everyone will use to travel the beyond. Where's Camden? Here, Sam. Do you have the rock? They have a tradition in Sirac. When a new invention is being crafted, a rock is chosen from the mines, and on the day the invention is released to the people, that rock is smashed into pieces, signifying its use among all of the people of the beyond. Arcas, would you do the honors of smashing the Gearlock Rock?
SPEAKER_03It would be my honor, Sam.
SPEAKER_12It's important to smash it in one swing.
SPEAKER_11Don't worry. I got this.
SPEAKER_06The good line will depart later this afternoon. In the meantime, I'm hosting a meal in the plaza in honor of Renee, Liana, and Ramulus Goodman, the best food Barronce has to offer. All of you are welcome to join us.
SPEAKER_08Reggie, you guys find the materials that Magnus needs to fix the engine. On it. Why are you in such a hurry to try out that engine? You said yourself it was an amazing design. I thought you'd be flipping out over it. I am. That's all I can think about. You're such a gearhead. Come on. We'll say hi, make the rounds, grab a couple white-feathered kebabs, and mosey on down to the docks.
SPEAKER_02I know. I didn't think she wanted to play again.
SPEAKER_01Hey guys! Kyla? When did you arrive? Just drove in from Kimvir. Sam wanted me to join you on the train.
SPEAKER_02To the well?
SPEAKER_01I think so. Have you been on it yet? No, but I can't wait.
SPEAKER_02Here, there's a seat next to me. Sit down.
SPEAKER_01Don't mind if I do. Wow. Your mom is playing with passion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're both a little surprised.
SPEAKER_01How's Brisolee?
SPEAKER_02I haven't been back since the funeral.
SPEAKER_01Really?
SPEAKER_02Mom wanted us to stay at the well.
SPEAKER_01That's a long time.
SPEAKER_02Tell me about it. I have work to do back home.
SPEAKER_07Work can wait. I do miss the nose hounds.
SPEAKER_12Any word on the missing metal. Not yet. But I'm looking into it. If it's him, Sam, something more has to be done. I told you. It wouldn't change. I know. I also need to talk to you about Argus.
SPEAKER_06Another time. Renee, that was exquisite.
SPEAKER_05It's been a long time, but it felt so good to be up there, feeling the music again. I forgot how much I love music in Barents. I see Kyla. I didn't know she was here. Hello!
SPEAKER_06She'll be joining us on the train.
SPEAKER_05Fabulous. To the well?
SPEAKER_06Resolet, actually.
SPEAKER_05Perfect.
SPEAKER_06How about dinner?
SPEAKER_05I can't eat. I'm too excited. About the train ride? Not exactly. I can't explain it.
SPEAKER_06Well, why don't you sit there?
SPEAKER_05Excuse me, Sam. I want to see if they'll play another song with me. Do you mind?
SPEAKER_06No, of course not. I'm sure.
SPEAKER_05We'll be back. I've got the perfect song.
SPEAKER_06Alright. I'll just sit here and talk to myself. I wonder where those boys are. Ellion. What am I gonna do with it?
SPEAKER_09Almost Yes! Well done, lad! I never lost faith once. You didn't have to reinstall the engine back into the boat, Reg. I know, but I couldn't help myself. Your additions to the designs looked marvelous. If I didn't know any better, I would have said you'd design it yourself. So seeing as you were delayed in the market, I took the liberty of installing it. Well, here's to a working engine and not a raging fireball. I should say so. You can forget about free rides if my boat goes up you smoke. I think it'd best if Magnus and I stay down here and watch the engine while you two men help. Excellent idea. Come on, Bug. Let's see if this day's trouble's been worth it.
SPEAKER_08Ready! Fire it up! And here we go. Something tells you we're not breaking through the wall of water anytime soon. I should certainly have a lot of people.
SPEAKER_09Tell me. Why are you laughing?
SPEAKER_10This isn't funny, you three! What kind of pyrite did I just fix it?
